Graphic Mentality

Ugh, this disapoints me so. Not everything needs to be all sleek and simplified. The new logo isn’t bad but I feel the previous one was so much more iconic.

Apologies for the unannounced hiatus, I have returned!
I came home for the holidays to find this billboard on the edge of the expressway. Could this sign not have more of a terrible placement?
QR codes are cool and all but do we really need a giant one next to a highway? First of all, the sign is encouraging drivers to commit the dangerously distracting act of taking out their cell phones. Anyone who would be foolish enough to do this while driving (not I) would then be focusing on everything but the road in hopes of snapping a pic of the code within a frantic eight seconds. All this for what? Probably a re-direction to the URL that’s listed right next to the QR code. Does this not render the code useless?
I decided to find out who were the people that thought this would be clever and to my surprise, and sadness, it was a local small scale marketing service provider called Go Print (goprintpr.com). I’m generally very supportive of such agencies, especially when they’re from Puerto Rico, so I was sad to see that they were the guilty party. You would think that an agency that deals with design and marketing would know better.
However, I’m not totally writing them off. One could argue the ad was successful seeing how I went to their site. I agree, bad publicity is better than no publicity. Also, it turns out the agency is actually pretty decent. I liked what I saw on their site and had I been the type of person that was looking for such a service in Puerto Rico they probably would have had me convinced, especially with their claim of 24 hour service.
Still goes without saying, an ad is a refection of its agency.

Just in time for the holidays! I came across this cute Flash application called Make-a-Flake from the good people at Barkley. Make paper snowflakes without wasting paper! (I want to use this to plan out my real paper snowflakes before I cut them!)

I’m currently working on a project about space and it got me thinking about NASA’s logo. While classic, I think it is bit outdated and I was wondering if anyone had redesigned it. A quick Google search showed me one redesign I found very interesting!
Created by the people at BaseDesign, this new logo is refreshing while still maintaing that mysterious space feel. The article about the design is very good read and has even more variations of the new logo, so I recommend you check it out here. I don’t think NASA will be taking up this design anytime soon but we can at least appreciate this redesign!

While naughty, I can’t help but appreciate how well this ad was made. I love how the type is based on feelings and emotions rather than just random words about sex. The layout is excellent, especially in regards to how the position of the Durex logo turned out. This beaufitully done ad is part of a series created by German illustrator/designer Andrej Krahne.

Recreating the boarding pass, love it! This needs to be done in real life!

Nice colors, great textures, good balance. I heart this art!

I have mixed feelings about this image. It looks pretty and has lovely craftsmanship but I don’t understand the composition well.
Of course, art is subjective, but here’s my opinion: The face appears to be sad and crying, which is fine. However, I feel the colors used don’t match the emotion. I would have liked to see a not-so-colorful version of this, I feel the emotion would have been stronger.
Still, other than that, this work is lovely. The artist did a great job with the values.
